What is Your Digital First Impression - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
What is Your Digital First Impression - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career You only get one chance to make a first impression. You have all heard that saying before and Iâm willing to bet that most of you donât find much insight in those words. And at first glance you would be right â" but lets dive deeper and look at this statement in context of our personal brands. If I were to ask you to think about the saying, âyou only get one chance to make a first impressionâ and visualize it playing out between two people, many of you will form a picture in your mind of two people physically meeting for the first time. Maybe you get a picture of two people shaking hands for the first time, or hear the small talk as they greet each other or maybe you imagine the interaction going smoothly or poorly. No matter what you see, the vast majority of you when asked to do this exercise will think in physical dimensions â" you will picture two people physically meeting for the first time. But, when taken in the context of building and promoting your personal brand you need to flip this convention on its head. You need to think in digital dimensions. Think digitally You need to think of somebody going to their laptop, typing in a search term or your name in Google and then clicking on the first five links that appear to be related to their search. This is the way that people meet in a digital economy. The information that is found in those first five links is the digital first impression that others will form of you. This information and how it affects othersâ views of you is what shapes the perception of your personal brand â" and perception is reality. If you think Iâm losing it just go to Google and type in any keyword or name related to something you are interested in. Then spend some time going through the first five search results â" if you try this out, you will find the names and related content from the individuals with the strongest personal brands for that search term. And, if you didnât notice; you just met someone and formed a digital first impression of them. How many people are exposed to you digitally and ultimately end up forming their digital first impression of you? Itâs hard to say how many for sure, but it is far more than the amount of people you will meet face to face in your lifetime. This is a by-product of our digital economy the majority of the people you meet are from your social networks or through people finding you on the web through search engines. These changes in the way people meet have many advantages for those who have positioned themselves favorably through building their personal brands. What are the advantages? 1.) You WILL BE FOUND online by those interested in meeting you 2.) You WILL RECEIVE unsolicited opportunities to grow your brand or career 3.) You WILL MEET more people and develop a stronger safety network 4.) You WILL ADVANCE quicker than those who do not develop a strong personal brand 5.) You WILL EARN more money and represent more perceived value by others You only get one chance to make a first impression. I believe in that statement now more than ever because people have the ability to find you online without you agreeing to it. If you have a strong personal brand you can influence a good digital first impression. If you do not have a strong personal brand, well, you will go largely unnoticed and find doors shut where others find doors open. If your anything like me you donât like running into shut doors â" you like them open with opportunity. If you think of it in this sense, creating your personal brand is much like having a set of keys to unlock closed doors. Do you have your keys? 4 Reasons to Join the Surging Tribe of Digital Nomads
4 Reasons to Join the Surging Tribe of Digital Nomads The way we work is changing. Weâre saying goodbye to the 9 to 5 grind, instead opting for flexibility to work whenever and wherever weâd like. In 2016, 43 percent of employed Americans said they spent at least some time working remotelyâ"thatâs a 4 percent increase from 2012. As remote work becomes more popular, a new trend has emerged. Digital nomads, employed adults travelling while working, are taking remote work to the next level. According to a recent study from Hostelworld, the worldâs largest hostel booking platform sparking social experiences across the globe, the digital nomad tribe is growing, and for good reason. Hostelworldâs study found that 71 percent of US citizens report that they are equally as productive or more productive when working remotely. Whatâs more, nearly 70 percent who have worked remotely while travelling said they were just as productive if not more productive during that time period. Thatâs good news for travellers who want to meet the world without sacrificing their career. I sat down with Otto Rosenberger, travel expert and CMO of Hostelworld, to discuss why working professionals should consider the digital nomad life. Hereâs what he had to say: Travel the globe without sacrificing your career Beyond working from the comfort of your living room, this newfound flexibility in the workforce offers a unique opportunity to travel the globe â" exploring new places, engaging with new cultures and beyond â" without sacrificing your career. A whopping 62 percent of US citizens would consider working remotely while travelling abroad if their company would support it. Whether youâre interested in spending a month abroad or a year committed to a program like Remote Year or Hacker Paradise, the first step is discussing these opportunities with your company. Itâs never too late to join this tribe of nomads Thereâs no doubt that millennials are driving the digital nomad movement. That said, itâs never too late to join the tribe. In fact, itâs older generations that are most interested in applying to formal programs that support remote work while travelling (such as Nomad List, Remote Year and Hacker Paradise). Those between the age of 45 and 49 are 2 times more likely to express interest in a remote work program. Boundless personal and professional benefits Thereâs more to travel than rest and relaxation. US citizens who have worked remotely while travelling abroad report a number of benefits including the ability to work and explore a new place, develop personally and professionally, learn about a new culture and meet new people. Increase your employability Whatâs more, travel experiences can give you a leg up on the competition when searching for a new job. Integrating travel into your daily routine gives you the opportunity to build a richer resume that shows off critical skills like communication, confidence and beyond. Weâve found that 73 percent of those that bring up travel experiences during the interview process report that it had a positive impact on the recruiterâs decision. Wow, after speaking to Otto, Iâm thinking about becoming a Digital nomad myself! Even if we donât go this far in our remote working habits, it certainly challenges the old-fashioned out-of-office message that says âIâm out of the country on business and wonât be able to respond to your e-mail until next weekâ.
